Mulalo Suite of the
Hacienda San Agustin de Callo. Photo: Hacienda San Agustin de Callo.
Around 1440 A.D., the Inca emperor Tupac
Yupanqui commanded the construction of a palace, and later his
son, Huayna Capac, concluded the work. In turn, his son
Atahualpa, the last of the Inca emperors and the king of Quito,
occupied the palace on his travels to Quito and Cajamarca, before
he was captured by the Spanish conquerors and executed in 1536.
The hacienda was written about by the
Spanish chronicler Cieza de Leon in 1553, and is one of only
two major Inca sites in Ecuador. To this day, the remaining rooms
prevail as a magnificent example of the unique style of Inca
construction. The site is currently being investigated by Dr.
David Brown of the University of Texas, with funding by the National
Geographic Society. Previously unknown portions of Inca walls
and foundations have been discovered throughout the restoration
process of the house.

the Hacienda San Agustin de Callo. Photo: Hacienda San Agustin de Callo.
In 1590, the King of Spain granted large
extensions of land to the religious orders in the different regions
of Ecuador, with the purpose of consolidating the conquest and
catholicizing the Indians. The Augustinian Order established
their monastery in the region of Mulalo at this site, and with
time constructed the colonial part of the house, blending the
Spanish architectural style with the older Inca building.
In the 1700s, San Agustin de Callo served
as the home of the French Geodesic Mission, whose scientific
results helped to determine the true shape of the planet. While
Geodesic Mission scientists were at work triangulating, they
witnessed two eruptions of Cotopaxi, in 1743 and 1744. In 1921,
the hacienda was purchased by General Leonidas Plaza Gutierrez,
president of Ecuador in 1901 and in 1912. The hacienda remains
in the family and is currently owned by the general's granddaughter
Mignon Plaza.

Accommodation in the 4-star Hacienda
Pinsaqui. This colonial hacienda was originally constructed in
1790, and spectacularly restored after an earthquake that shook
the region in 1867. The building originally housed a textile
workshop, employing nearly 1000 local weavers and spinners. Over
the centuries Pinsaqui has hosted numerous illustrious guests.
including General Simon Bolivar, the revered liberator of Ecuador,
who often spent the night at the hacienda on his trips to and
from Bogota, Colombia, finding a special peace and tranquillity,
more than a hundred years ago.
The beautiful estate greets you with
its white stone gates, and continues to impress with well-kept
yards, fountains, cool mountain breezes and a picturesque landscape
with a view of the Imbabura Volcano. Upon entering the bright
building, you are welcomed by decorated walls and the homey smell
of burning fireplaces. If you admire antiques, history or beautiful
things, the hacienda will delight you. An abundance of its fine
art, furniture and sculpture is Spanish. The great grandfather
of the hacienda's current generation served as an Ambassador
to Spain and his experiences there influenced the decoration
of the hacienda. Pay attention to the impressive chandeliers,
marble floors, framed newspaper clippings from the early 1800s
and the wonderful aromas of fresh flowers and plants.
Each room is unique and has a character
all of its own. There are 16 suites with fireplaces that comfortably
accommodate up to 5 people. Within the rooms you will find sheepskin
rugs, heavy blankets and pieces of traditional art. Most rooms
have a view overlooking the lovely gardens behind the hacienda.
The tradition of the hacienda remains
strong in the live, lunch-time musical events. Local native people
(Otavaleños) come to the hacienda and entertain listeners
with their traditional music and warm characters, intimately
sharing their culture, through verse and instruments, with the
guests.
Not overshadowed by its size and historical
events, the hacienda creates a warm atmosphere, full of character,
making for a wonderful stay. The hacienda has been in the Freile-Larrea
family for over five generations. Members of the family will
personally attend to your needs while you are staying with them.
Horses have been the family's big passion over the decades, a
passion which can clearly be seen at the hacienda, from the paintings
on the walls to the small show jumping area in part of the garden.
As a traditional hacienda family, the Freile-Larrea will make
your stay a wonderful one.
