What to bring
The Napo Wildlife Center provides rubber
boots (up to US men's size 11) and nylon rain ponchos free of
charge to those guests who request them. You may choose to use
your own boots or sneakers for forest hikes depending upon the
conditions. Likewise, you may bring your own raingear. Of course
soap, shampoo, towels, and other such items are provided just
as they are at any luxury hotel.
There is a 44-pound (20kg) per person
baggage weight limit on the flights from Quito to Coca, and overage
will be charged directly by the airline. This limit should not
pose a problem to most Napo Wildlife Center travellers, and most
hotels in Quito will store your dress clothes and heavy jackets
for you while you are with us.
We suggest that you consider the following
general packing guidelines, but please consult your travel agent
if you have any questions. There are obviously many personal
choices that can alter this list (pants with zip-off legs, for
example) so please view this as a guide and pack for your preference.
Some may want to print this page and use it as a basic checklist.
- Good binoculars for wildlife viewing.
- Camera/video gear (if using film, lower
ASA for open areas (50 or 100), higher ASA for forest (400 and
up). [24 hour electricity (120v) is available for charging batteries
and digital equipment.]
- Two or three pairs of lightweight long
pants.
- Two or three long-sleeved lightweight
shirts.
- Two or three T-shirts.
- One or two pairs of shorts (mostly
for around the lodge).
- Lightweight sweater or jacket.
- Raingear (if you prefer not to use
the ponchos provided).
- Three or four pairs of absorbent socks.
- One pair of sneakers and/or hiking
boots.
- Sandals (Teva type or similar for around
the lodge).
- Small day pack for excursions.
- A bottle or canteen to carry water
on hike (1-quart size is sufficient).
- Ziplock-type plastic bags to cover
optics or other gear.
- Insect repellent (Skin-so-soft or DEET
product with at least 20% concentration).
- Flashlight or headlamp bright enough
for use on night walks.
- Small, packable umbrella (can be useful
in light rain).
- A hat for sun protection (and that
will stay on during windy boat rides).
- Sunglasses.
- Sunscreen lotion with a high SPF rating.
- Swimsuit (if you intend to swim in
the lake).
- Personal toiletries and medications
(carry medications with you when arriving and leaving the lodge).
- Extra batteries/film/video tapes as
appropriate.
- A photocopy of your passport (always
good to have while traveling).
- Money (US$) for bar bills and handicraft
purchases.
